Another drive to Moranbah (this one was different though)

Filed under: Work — Duane @ 11:25 am

I meant to write this post on the weekend, but the weekend was busy with Agnes’ baby shower and then my Nana’s 85th birthday. So not a lot of time for this. I wanted to relate a drive I had last week as it was a bit different, at least for me. This week I am away on the eastern seaboard, and thankfully this is my last week away for a couple of months.

Flight Travel tips & tricks

Here I am sitting at the airport and I was earlier ticked off at the way some people “assume” they are all important and it doesn’t matter if they hold everyone else up. Here are a few things to help you be ready and non-rushed when you need to catch a flight.

List analysis in Excel 2003

There are a number of ways of achieving the same result of finding data from an Excel list. In this post I would like to look at some of these different methods so you can determine which one you would use depending upon your situation. The file that I will be using to demonstrate these techniques is available HERE and you can download said file for practice. The file was made using data from the Northwind Access database, which was then exported out to Excel. This post will look at Excel 2003 and earlier. I might do an Excel 2007 version in the future as Sorting, Filters and Pivot Tables have changed in the newer version.

A Sunday with a difference

Filed under: Home Stuff — Duane @ 9:25 am

And no, not because it was Mother’s Day. Sunday morning dawned dark and early for Agnes & I – at 4:45. So instead of doing the usual of sitting around the house and then maybe going back to sleep, we did the unusual – Agnes came up with the idea of going down the coast to see the sun rise. So 15 minutes later saw us on the road down to the coast.

We had a wonderful morning walking on the beach. We didn’t make it in time to see the sun come up, but it didn’t matter as the clouds were in the way (typical, the one day with clouds is the day we want to see the sun rise). Took some photos (some pics can be seen on Agnes’ blog with her post of the day), and just relaxed. We left about 7am and looked for somewhere for breakfast. The smell of bacon from the beach had us assuming that the local surf club did breakfast, but that was a false start. Drove down the main drag for a bit and found a corner cafe open that did breakfast and I had something for breakfast I cannot remember having for breakfast ever – pancakes! Pancakes with banana, ice-cream and honeycomb butter. It was divine!

MS Project Gantt Charts comparisons

This post is to help explain the uses of the different Gantt Charts to be found in Microsoft Project. A practice file to refer to can be found HERE. Note that the link points to a file that is not a .mpp file. When I attempted to download the uploaded file, all it would do is open the file in the browser. So I didn’t want to take any chances, thus changed the extension of the file to be downloaded. When you download the file, change the .mp_ to .mpp and you will then have a working Microsoft Project file to play with.

The practice file is one I made for a university assignment a few years ago. It is rather simplistic in scope, but the tasks are linked, have resources, and there are costs to the project.

At home sick :(

Filed under: Home Stuff — Duane @ 8:54 am

Well this will be an unpleasant post – currently I am at home sick. Had vomiting yesterday and diarrhea today, so not very pleasant at all. The doctors think it was a case of food poisoning but I really don’t know what I have eaten that will have caused this problem. Hopefully it will finish today and all will be well tomorrow. At least it happened the week I am at home, not when I am away for work.

This has brought me to the follow conclusion –
I am a sick puppy!

I have had a cold, ear problems and now everything that has hit me in the last few days. I never used to get sick and now I seem to be getting sick all the time. I think it is time to see a doc and get a full physical and see what they say.

But on the positive side this gives me some time at home today to possibly finish up some technical posts. Shall have to see what I feel like.

I’m back!

Filed under: Home Stuff — Duane @ 3:02 pm

Like the title says – I’m back! Did you miss me? ;p Boy did that cold knock me around. I was lethargic and not feeling like doing anything for more than a week even after I was over the cold. I am still not 100% as my left ear will not unblock no matter what I try. But I feel better than I was and that is the main thing.

Work was busy for the month of April and will be even worse for May. Bar the first week of May (next week) I will be away most days for the rest of the month. Hopefully Agnes won’t pop early. Speaking of Agnes you may not have heard the news yet – she has gestational diabetes. 😦 She had the test last Saturday, didn’t feel the best after it, saw the obst on Tuesday, he said the test was poor go for the full test, and Agnes failed that as well. However we were informed that with twins and two placentas the chance of getting diabetes is increased. And she just lucked out getting it. So what does this mean for her? Glucose monitoring and diet to make sure she doesn’t need the insulin, and if she does require it, have the insulin on hand. The other bad news about this situation is that it increases Agnes’ chances of Type 2 diabetes later in life.

What have I been up to since I last posted? Doing odd things around the house; went down to Sydney for a 2 day conference for work; went to Moranbah again (and I will there again in a fortnight’s time!) for work; and did some reading. Thankfully when flying for work my ears didn’t give me any problems, but then again I did use earplugs to help. Last flight I didn’t really feel like I needed them, so hopefully it will continue to improve.

With the long weekend we won’t be doing much – even though exercise is good for Agnes, she is limited in her mobility, thus we don’t get away much. Just keeping the house clean and getting more things for the bubs, and of course the all important relaxing!

That is it from me at the moment, post as soon as I can in the future.
