Life with Lucas

Filed under: Fatherhood, Home Stuff — Duane @ 7:47 pm

Wow, it has been well over a year since the last post. And a lot has changed in that time – new job, Emma and Caitlin are now 2 and well into the toddler stage, nearly finished up uni, and of course the birth of our son Lucas. How could I possibly forget that? Life couldnt be more different when dealing with 3 kids under the age of 3.

The week of hospitals

Filed under: Fatherhood, Home Stuff — Duane @ 7:58 pm

Yes it has been awhile since posts, March was a bad month with the girls continually sick, and us continually tired and grumpy because of the sickness. At the end of March, April looked promising and indeed it has been a good month – except for the last week. I drove to the local hospital 6 times within the space of one week – and only one visit a day.

It’s been awhile …

Filed under: Fatherhood, Home Stuff — Duane @ 8:21 pm

And where has the time gone? Sorry it’s been quite awhile ‘tween updates but time to blog has been extremely limited, not to say the desire to shout out. So what have we been up to? This, that and the usual.

Workwise, things are winding into normality with the bulk of the training now completed. This does not mean that things are slowing down, pace is still roughly the same. There are manuals to be updated, things to organise with the training that will now occur, systems and processes to set up, trial and update. Not to mention that I still need to learn the ins and the outs of what the whole system can do. We still have two of the contract trainers onboard and in some areas they know significantly more than I do. The good thing is though,  that with the bulk of the training now out of the way, I can attempt to go back to the gym during lunch break. Plus with the time it seems I will be arriving at work in the mornings, I might do a cardio session in the morning, thus focus on weights during lunch.

Sick babies

Filed under: Fatherhood — Duane @ 11:42 pm

It’s nearly midnight on a cold, dreary spring night. I’m cold, and my legs won’t warm up, especially when I walk to the nursery to check on one of the girls. Since Friday both the girls have been sick with a cold and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. It looks like they have the same thing Agnes had last week and last Friday was the aches and pains; while on Saturday started the coughing, running nose and eyes. But it was a comment made by a friend’s mum that made me think about how lucky we are compared to our parents, who had to deal with sick babies.

A touch of motherhood

Filed under: Fatherhood — Duane @ 8:30 pm

This has been a weird week, and it is only half done at the moment. As the post title says, this week I have had a brief touch of what it is like to look after babies during the day. Agnes has been home, but on Sunday evening she came down with the flu – achy body, sore skin and a temp of around 39. So I stayed home Monday to look after her. She spent a fair bit of the day on the daybed sleeping. So it was up to me to look after Caitlin and Emma for the day. Agnes was there to do the feeds, but her arms were sore and all, so I did the nappy changes, etc, etc.

Father’s Day

Filed under: Fatherhood — Duane @ 8:06 pm

Today was my first father’s day. Do I really care? To be honest no. It has always frustrated me that people see one off days in the year (Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, even Christmas) as so important. To me I am a lover, a son to my parents and now a father ever day of the year. So why should one day in particular be so important? Anyway ….

First Spring update

Filed under: Fatherhood — Duane @ 4:42 am

Well it’s that time of year again – Spring! You can definitely tell it’s spring here in Queensland as it is no longer as cold as it was four weeks ago. Not only that, we went for a walk late yesterday afternoon and a number of bushes were in bloom.

It is nearly 4:30 am and this is the first night in over a week that the girls have been a bit unsettled in their night routine. They have been sleeping from about 7:30 – 8:00 until between 2 – 3 am, feed and then sleep once more til between 5 and 6 am. This evening they woke up at 1:15 wanting a feed, and Emma woke up at 4 hungry. So I gave her the top up that she refused to take earlier and she is now contently sleeping. I changed Caitlin and thankfully she went back to sleep, virtually blissfully unaware.

Dichotomies of nappies

Filed under: Fatherhood — Duane @ 9:26 am

An observation both Agnes and I have witnessed this week is in relation to the girls’ nappies – when they have done a small number two or have a wet nappy, they scream bloody murder; yet when they completely fill their nappy with a number two, they sit there content as can be happy and smiling. Go figure!

Duane’s tip of the week – when the twins are in a routine, do not buck the routine! We learnt this lesson early on when Caitlin and Emma would be quite annoyed with us for being out and about and not being able to feed them when they wanted. We have learnt from that situation and take a feeding pillow and bottles of formula with us when going out.

Six week update

Filed under: Fatherhood — Duane @ 1:39 pm

This was originally going to be a simple post about how things are going, but week 6 has been  interesting. So read more for full details.

Well so far so good, we are still here and the girls are as well. The week is nearly over and already a lot of happened. Emma is finally harness/brace free and is wiggling around like a baby possessed – she is virtually a different baby after the removal of her harness; Caitlin had a cold/fever that my mum has and it has turned her into a docile baby, Agnes has what my mum has cold/flu wise and we had to have a couple of nannies in during the week to help out. Then there was my lack of sleep and needing to find a way to get to sleep while overtired.

My first solo 2am bottle feed

Filed under: Fatherhood — Duane @ 3:24 am

Its nearly 3am here at the moment and I have survived my first 2am bottle feed on my own! How great do I feel? Now I just need to get the girls to sleep and all will be good. Caitlin and Emma are settled in their bouncies, and I have some lullaby music in the background to try and get them to sleep. I think I will have a battle on my hands there though as they seem quite awake. Unlike last night where after their 2am feed they went straight back to sleep.
